Common Beginner Mistakes

The most frequent reasons new climbers die in Cairn.

1. The "Sprint" Mentality

Assuming you can just hold 'Up' and 'Fast Climb' through sections.

  • Reality: Sprinting burns stamina exponentially. You will gas out halfway up a wall and fall.
  • Fix: Move, Rest, Move, Rest. Rhythm is key.

2. Hoarding Pitons

"I'll save this piton for later."

  • Reality: You fall, lose 30 minutes of progress, and still have full pitons.
  • Fix: Use them. You can craft more. You can't craft "Time".

3. Ignoring the "Pump"

Continuing to climb when the stamina bar is greyed out (max stamina reduced).

  • Reality: You have no buffer. One slip = fall.
  • Fix: Bivouac earlier. Eat food. Shake out more.

4. Forgetting the Camera

Climbing "blind" into a dead end.

  • Reality: You climb up 10m, realize there are no holds, and can't downclimb because you are tired.
  • Fix: Scout 100% of the route before leaving the ground. Use Camera Mode (L1/Tab).

5. Climbing in the Rain

"I just need to finish this pitch."

  • Reality: Rain makes holds slippery. Moves that were 100% safe effectively become 50% hazards.
  • Fix: Set up the Portaledge (Bivouac). Sleep it off.

6. Not Eating

"I'll save food for the boss." (There are no bosses).

  • Reality: Food gives buffs (Grit, Grip, Stamina). Climbing hungry means climbing weak.
  • Fix: Cook and eat at every Bivouac.
