Reading the Route

Camera Mode isn't just for looking at views; it's for choosing your battle.

safe Routes

Usually "The Long Way Around".

  • Features:
    • Many ledges (standing rests).
    • Rough rock texture (high friction).
    • Lower angle (less overhang).
  • Cost:
    • Time (higher food/water burn over time).
    • Mental fatigue (longer play session).

Fast Routes

Usually " The Direct Line".

  • Features:
    • Straight up.
    • Dynamic moves required (fewer intermediate holds).
    • Often involves cracks or smooth sections.
  • Cost:
    • High burst stamina cost.
    • High consequences (clean falls, but long falls).

Strategy Guide

When to choose Safe

  1. Heavy Load: If you are carrying a lot of gear, you can't make the dynamic moves required for Fast routes.
  2. Injury: If Aava is injured or "pumped" (low max stamina).
  3. Low Visibility: Night climbing or fog makes finding dynamic holds risky.

When to choose Fast

  1. Approaching Storm: Speed is safety when lightning strikes. Get to the Bivouac NOW.
  2. Low Resources: If you are out of food/water, time is your enemy. You need to summit before you starve.
  3. Good Condition: Full stamina, chalked up, and feeling flowy.

Hybrid Approach

The best climbers switch.

  • Take the Fast line through easy sections to save time.
  • Switch to the Safe line when the difficulty spikes (Crux).
  • Always secure the transition with a Piton.
